What is the best diet? It depends. It depends on your situation and goals. It depends on your budget. It depends on your time. It depends on how much of a priority it is. It depends on your lifestyle. It depends on your other responsibilities. Here’s what I truly believe works. It is simple. it can be as easy or as hard as you make it. Eat whole foods and limit your added to sugar to none or very little. It is all about balance. If you are at your goal body composition and your performance and energy are great, then you’re okay to break that rule occasionally.
You’ve probably heard the 80/20 rule of balancing your nutrition, I prefer 90/10. With 90/10 rule if you’re eating 3 whole foods meals per day and not skipping meals, 2 of those meals can be “not so good” options.
I like to say you allowed yourself to enjoy a treat.
But if you take a look at all the nutrition programs out there the ones rated with the most success are more similar than they are different. When done properly any of them can get you to your goals. A good nutrition coach will help raise your nutritional awareness. They shouldn’t just tell you what and when to eat but give you the why.
They should also help you focus on food quality. Very few diets recommend you eat MORE processed “foods”. Pretty much all of them recommend eating whole, minimally processed, nutrient dense foods.
A good coach should help you shift away from those processed foods towards foods that will help correct nutrient deficiencies. Ever think why do so many processed foods have to add nutrients back in? This is a big one when you’re feeling terrible, have low energy or trouble sleeping. Usually within a few weeks of correcting some of those deficiencies you will start to feel better.
A good coach will help you become aware with how much you are eating and help control that intake to meet your goals. There are a few different ways this can be done like using estimations or actually weighing and measuring your food.
In the end there is no such thing as one, perfect ultimate diet. Everyone has so many variables that come into play. Which is why I like to experiment and be able to provide those tools to the people I work with. Let me listen to your needs and goals. I want to hear what you want to accomplish and how you need help. I want to hear what’s really important to you. Then create the best plan that works for you; one that’s specific to your goals and your lifestyle. Because that’s what I really love to do.
